For several years now, American students have been losing ground academically with their peers around the globe, particularly in the areas of science and math[1]. To combat this trend, educational leaders have been developing strategies to emphasize the critical areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This strategy, named S.T.E.A.M., has had varying degrees of success but has also come under some scrutiny for not stressing the importance of other subjects, particularly the arts.
The Kona School is aware of how the arts is an integral part of science, technology, engineering, and math. It is also clear that the arts play an important role in getting a well-rounded education and in developing the skills necessary to thrive in a career. Artistic expression is a core element of some of the most prominent vocational paths. From graphic design and marketing, to architectural development and city planning, understanding and appreciating the arts is vital.
