Our Story

The Kona School concept evolved from two dads talking about their kids.  The dads were Martin Ramos and James Smith and the conversation eventually turned to the subject of education, specifically, how each father felt about their kids’ school experiences.  That led to stories both humorous and horrible of their own school days and what could be done to improve the educational system for their own children.

This conversation was not particularly unique; parents frequently talk about their children’s education. What made this discussion distinct was where it led. Weeks later, these two dads were still brainstorming ideas for a model school that targeted kids who have varied learning styles and personalities. This model school would be structured to utilize the newest technology and most successful teaching strategies while also taking a holistic approach to education. This approach takes into account nutrition, health and physical exercise, ecologically efficient and sustainable campuses, as well as the individual student’s motivational factors.

It was with this vision in mind that The Kona School took shape.  With extensive research and the capable assistance from an outstanding Board of Directors, this vision is becoming a reality.  The focus has always been on helping students learn.  Our mission is clear: The Kona School will foster in each student a desire to learn creatively, think independently, and act responsibly.
